— Vanier Park is a municipal park located in the Kitsilano neighbourhood of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, created in 1967. — It is home to the Museum of Vancouver, the Vancouver Maritime Museum, the City of Vancouver Archives, and the H.R. [3] — The land was acquired from the Province by the Federal government in 1928. On October 28, 1966, it was turned over to the Vancouver Park Board by the Federal Government. Named for former Governor General of Canada Georges Vanier, the park officially opened on May 30, 1967. The H.R. MacMillan Space Centre and the Vancouver Museum complex opened in 1968, thanks to lumber baron MacMillan’s $1.5 million donation.[4] — Deputy Park Board Superintendent William Livingstone, famous for his landscape design for Queen Elizabeth Park and VanDusen Botanical Garden, increased the size of the original park site using tons of free fill from the excavation for the MacMillan Bloedel Building on Georgia Street. The fill added additional acres onto the park which was then landscaped by Livingstone and his crew.

From the views of patterned Richmond farmlands to the tranquil New Kinross Creek and Avalon Pond, many people enjoy the variety of informal spaces in this park; there are many trails and quiet places to enjoy choruses of birds and a lush woodland feel. — Everett Crowley Park is a 38-hectare large forested park with trails, located within the Champlain Heights area of Vancouver. — The park was previously a landfill, but was allowed to become reforested recreational purposes. Currently, it is Vancouver's 5th largest public park.[2] The surrounding neighborhood was the last area to be developed in Vancouver in the 1970s. — The park is maintained, developed, and protected by the Vancouver Park Board and stewarded by a committee of the Champlain Heights Community Association, the Everett Crowley Park Committee (ECPC).[4] Many of the trails in the park are designated as dog off-leash areas. — Everett Crowley Park is situated north of the Fraser River. It is a 3-minute walk north of Vancouver's developing River District, on the edge of the Fraser River — History — Prior to being a park, the area was known to be the Kerr Street garbage dump.[2] The Kerr Street garbage dump served as Vancouver's main landfill from 1944 to 1967.[4] The dump was closed in 1966, and the deposited waste was up to 49 metres in places.[4] Following 1967, the area was closed for 20 years until being re-introduced as Everett Crowley Park in 1987.[2] Dedication and opening of the park was promoted through petitioning and lobbying by local residents.[4] Eventually, the garbage dump was reforested by local and invasive species, although some efforts were made by the community. Since 2010, large areas of Himalayan Blackberry have been removed and replaced with several thousand trees planted by the Vancouver Park Board.[4] The park is named after Everett Crowley, who was the owner of Avalon Dairy, Vancouver's last independent dairy.[2] Everett Crowley served on Vancouver's Park Board as a Parks Commissioner from 1961 to 1966. — Everett Crowley Park is in transition. Since the early 1970s, native and invasive plants and animals have been slowly recolonizing the park, transforming it into a young forest of hardy deciduous trees, wildflowers, and opportunistic blackberry. The area is recovering, and the result is a botanically diverse landscape frequented by birds and other wildlife, who find refuge in this urban wilderness.[7] — Before to usage as a garbage dump in 1944, the area was a heavy dense coniferous forest. Trees native to this area were mostly hemlock and cedar trees.[4] In addition, salmon were present in a creek that ran through a ravine.[4] After its closure as a landfill, local plants such as cottonwoods and maple trees began moving back into the area.[4] Invasive species, such as blackberry shrubs, have taken residence in the park, and are a very common sight.[4] — According to a bird expert, over 200 different species of birds have been spotted in the park.[4] These include Stellars' Jays, Black-capped Chickadees, and the American Robin. The park is also a landing spot for migrant songbirds.

Grohman Narrows Provincial Park
Grohman Narrows Park is day use park located 5 kms west of Nelson on Hwy 3A. It protects the sensitive habitat of several plants and animals while providing visitors with some views of Kootenay River, Narrows Island and Grohman Narrows. The area provides for nature appreciation with low impact walking trails that meander along the meadow and marshland area then continue to wind through the forest. The area is very active with school groups in the spring and dog walkers year round. There is an abundance of Saskatoon berries in mid to end of July all through the trail system.
Natural & Cultural Values
The area protects special habitat of several species of plants, animals, insects and Painted Turtles. A small island contains a stand of old growth black cottonwood that provide habitat for many birds.
The park was created in May 1981 through the efforts and wishes of the Donna and Wilbert Anderson of Nelson, B.C. and is named after William Adolf Baillie Grohman… a Kootenay pioneer.
There are no services at this park with the exception of two picnic tables and a bench situated along the meadow trail.

Kokanee Creek Provincial Park

Kokanee Creek Provincial Park is situated in the Slocan Range of the Selkirk Mountain Range and borders the West Arm of Kootenay Lake, 19 kms from Nelson on Hwy 3A. With 257 hectares, the park has over a kilometer of sandy beaches and a large delta area. It protects the active alluvial creek fan with its marshes and extensive sand spit. Kokanee Creek bisects the landscape to form a steep canyon that can be viewed from an observation platform. The area received park status in 1955 thanks to the forward thinking of local land planners who saw value in the many attributes on both sides of Kokanee Creek. The establishment of the campgrounds, the visitor center and other amenities quickly followed under the watchful eye of local interest groups.
Kokanee (the Sinixt name for the redfish that swim upstream to spawn) has been a West Kootenay landmark popular with tourists and locals alike ever since. When staying at the park there is always something to do with a network of walking and hiking trails in and around the park, two adventure playgrounds, the Kokanee Visitor Centre, Kokanee spawning channel, boat launch and of course some required beach time. And that is just within the park boundary!
The Kokanee Creek Nature Centre
The Kokanee Creek Nature Centre located beside the Kokanee Spawning channel was built in the mid-1970s to encourage an appreciation of nature and to educate campers and residents on the unique ecosystems plus the importance of good environmental stewardship in the preservation of the park. Supported by The Columbia Basin Trust, B.C. Parks, B.C. Gaming, Regional Districts E, F & G, RAP Park Contracting, the West Kootenay Eco Society, http://ecosociety.ca, the Friends of West Kootenay Parks, Nelson & District Credit Union and a variety of donors. The Nature Center is open from May 15 to Sept. 28, 2020. The Redfish Coffee Bar and Gift Shop, located in the Nature Centre, serves up Oso coffee, fresh baking, ice cream and treats. The Gift shop offers custom t-shirts, nature guides and more with all proceeds going to support the educational programs.
